There’s a lot to love about Putney. Sitting alongside the Thames and packed with brilliant pubs, independent spots, plenty of shops, live music, green spaces, and plenty of local history, it’s the kind of neighbourhood where you can easily make a whole day of it.
Shop your way down Putney High Street, wander along the river, catch a gig, explore the parks, or simply settle in for a long lunch and a few drinks. And with The Spotted Horse right on the high street, opposite Putney Station, we’re perfectly placed to be your starting point, half-way point, or final destination.
We’ve been part of Putney for rather a long time. The Spotted Horse dates back to the 18th century, with records placing a pub of the same name here by at least 1826. However, people have always recognised us by our iconic wooden horse keeping watch above the entrance.
There are a few particularly good stories tucked into our past, too. The pub was reportedly used as a meeting place in 1949 by atomic spy Klaus Fuchs and his Soviet handler, Aleksandr Feklisov. It was also historically supplied by Young’s Ram Brewery in nearby Wandsworth, where beer was once delivered by shire horse.
A lot has changed since then, but we’re still proudly planted in the middle of Putney High Street, now with great British food, live sport, plenty of pints and even a rooftop beach club thrown in for good measure.

Putney has a pretty impressive musical side, and the Half Moon on Lower Richmond Road is one of London’s most iconic live music spots. Plan your visit around one of their shows, then make a night of it with dinner and drinks in Putney before or after.
Head towards the river and take a stroll along the Thames, soaking up one of the loveliest sides of SW London. Whether you are walking from central London, or Barnes, get those steps in, work up an appetite on your walk, then head back towards the high street for a proper pub lunch or a Sunday roast with us.

For a proper local gem, Eddy recommends Giuliano Deli Cafe on Lacy Road. This family-run Italian deli is the kind of place you’ll be very happy you discovered. Pop in for delicious pasta, freshly made sandwiches, and Italian deli favourites before carrying on your Putney adventures.
When London gives you sunshine, make the most of it and head down to Wandsworth Park for a wander by the Thames. Find a spot on the grass, or add a little friendly competition to the afternoon with a game of mini golf. It’s a lovely escape from the high street while still being close enough to head back into Putney for drinks afterwards.
